welding defects pores

1. Definition and harm of pores in stainless steel welded pipes

Porosity in stainless steel welded pipes is a cavity formed in the weld due to the failure of gas to escape in time during the welding process. The presence of pores will cause serious harm to the quality of stainless steel welded pipes.
First, pores will reduce the strength and toughness of the weld. The presence of pores reduces the effective bearing area of the weld, making the weld prone to breakage when subjected to external force. At the same time, the metal structure around the pores may produce stress concentration due to the presence of pores, further reducing the strength and toughness of the weld.

Secondly, pores will affect the sealing of the weld. In some occasions with high requirements for sealing, such as petrochemicals, aerospace and other fields, pores in the weld may cause medium leakage, thereby causing serious safety accidents.
Finally, pores will also affect the appearance quality of the weld. Surface pores will make the weld surface uneven, affect the appearance of the product, and reduce the market competitiveness of the product.

2. Causes of pores in stainless steel welded pipes
(I) Improper surface treatment of the parent material
If there are impurities such as oil, rust, water marks, and scale on the surface of the parent material, these impurities will decompose and produce gas during welding, thereby increasing the probability of pores in the weld.

(II) Influence of welding process parameters
Parameters such as welding current, voltage, and speed have an important influence on the formation of pores. Too slow speed and too large welding current will cause the molten pool to overheat and increase the solubility of the gas, but the gas will not have time to escape during the cooling process, and pores are easily formed; too fast speed and too small welding current will cause the molten pool temperature to be too low, the molten pool has poor fluidity, and the gas is difficult to escape.

3. Prevention measures for pores in stainless steel welded pipes
Before welding, the surface of the parent material should be thoroughly cleaned to remove impurities such as oil, rust, moisture, and scale. Reasonably select parameters such as welding current, voltage, and speed. On the premise of ensuring welding quality, try to choose a smaller welding current and voltage, and appropriately reduce the welding speed to increase the gas escape time.
